(More customer reviews)I bought this as a fan for when I sleep. I wanted a product with HEPA filter, and this model was very attractive because its filters never need replacing. Overall it seems like a good product. The design is very attractive and Holmes has been in business for a while, so they are a reputable company. Overall, I am pleased with the fan, but I can't recommend it for a sleeping/white-noise device unless you're a deep sleeper or tolerant of an occasional popping noise. For me, it doesn't work as a sleeping fan. It would be fine in any other situation, though.
The first noticeable problem is the fan noise. There are 4 speed settings -- Off, high, medium, and low. The lowest is nice and very quite. However, medium is very loud. It's like there should be 1 or 2 speeds in between low and medium, but there aren't. I don't even use the highest speed because it is just way too loud for sleeping. I can still sleep with the low and medium speeds, though.
A recent problem started occurring and that has had me possibly looking for a replacement. The fan has starting making a random crackle sound when it runs. This happens every few minutes and is comparable to the click you hear when someone is cutting their nails. The instructions for the fan clearly say the filter "may produce an occasional popping or crackling sound" when the ionizer is enabled. Turns out it's much more than occasional, though. And to turn off the ionizer function defeats the purpose of the device. I guess while I'm sleeping I could turn the ionizer off, but I wanted this fan to clean the air while I slept, since that's typically 6+ hours and it would seem logical to clean the air during such an extended period of time.
I was very excited about the features of the fan, but ended up being let down overall by its loud fan and crackling. If you plan to buy this to run while you sleep, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're okay not using the selling point of the device (its HEPA filter and ionizer technology). If you plan to use the fan in any other situation, I'd say go for it. The fan can be loud for sleeping, but it's likely fine for daytime use. The crackling also probably wouldn't be a problem if you were awake and watching TV or something.
