Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 12 Inches, Silver Review

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 12 Inches, Silver

Dyson advertises that this fan moves 5 gallons per second of air. That translates to 40 cubic feet per minute. This is how fans are typically specified. But Dyson won't use those units of measurement, because that would allow you to make the comparison yourself and realize just what a lousy air mover this fan is.
To put this into perspective, a small clip-on 6" fan can move 190 cubic feet per minute. That little fan costs about $20.
Dyson achieves this deception through props - typically streamers placed around the edge of the fan in store displays and ads. Sure, the air does move quickly from the edge of the fan, just as fast as it moves from conventional fans. However, this is only a thin ring of air movement in the case of the Dyson fans - versus a full circle of air movement from a conventional fan. This helps to explain the difference in air moving performance.
Conventional fans are also quieter. Again, that little 6" clip-on is only 37 decibels. The Dyson is 50 decibels.
The Dyson fan is beautiful and safe. But as a fan, it is loud, has terrible air flow, and is preposterously overpriced other than as a work of art.
Better to buy a fan that works and some artwork that isn't masquerading as a fan.

A table fan that quietly and effectively cools an entire room without any blades? Introducing the Dyson Air Multiplier, which works differently from conventional fans. The Air Multiplier uses an airfoil-shaped ramp to amplify the airflow 15 to 18 times to create a cool blast of smooth air without the unpleasant buffeting caused by spinning blades. The energy-efficient motor draws in more than 5 gallons of air per second using the same technologies used in jet engines. The air passes over the airfoil-shaped ramp, which channels its direction. Air behind and around the machine is also drawn into the airflow, amplifying it at least 15 times for a quiet, cool breeze that will let you relax. With no blades or grille to get in the way, the Air Multiplier is safe around kids and pets, and it\'s easy to clean too. The touch-tilt feature pivots on its own center of gravity, letting it stay put without clamping. You can also adjust the airflow to get as much as you want. There\'s no "high," "medium," or "low"; the dimmer switch lets you set the exact power level you want. The Air Multiplier oscillates with a touch up to 90 degrees to cover a whole room. Includes base, loop amplifier, and operating manual. 2-year warranty. Measures 21.5 x 14 x 6 inches with 12-inch loop.

Lasko 4910 Platinum Desktop Wind Tower Oscillating Fan Review

Lasko 4910 Platinum Desktop Wind Tower Oscillating Fan

I picked up one of these fans for use in my office since I work in a room with various computers, and even with the AC on, it can get quite hot in there. This relatively compact unit doesn't take up that much room on your desk (about the same amount of space your average desk lamp would take up). It also has a nice oscillation feature, as well as a directional nozzle built into the upper half that can be used independently of the oscillation. Overall a nice fan and at a good price.
An update to this review: After four years of daily use (Monday through Friday, 9 to 5) this fan has finally gone to meet its maker. So, keeping that in mind, I would most definitely recommend this fan.

With its slim 6-inch diameter, this unique fan works great on a desktop or any other place without a lot of surface space. Front-mounted electronic controls offer three refreshing speed options to ensure just the right amount of cooling power. For added convenience, the fan's pivoting top module enables air movement in two stationary directions, while its optional oscillation feature works at any speed to provide even greater coverage. Shipped fully assembled for immediate use, the UL-listed fan measures 6 by 6 by 14 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 10 Inches, Blue Review

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 10 Inches, Blue

This fan is no air multiplier. See all those holes around the base of the fan? Those are the air inlets for the blower which they've thoughtfully hidden in the base. You can't get something for nothing - and that includes air.
Compared with a clip-on 6" fan, this fan is a waste of both money and space. That little clip-on costs $20 and moves 190 cubic feet per minute. The Dyson moves 40 cubic feet per minute (or as Dyson specifies: 5 gallons per second). Comparably sized tabletop fans move over a thousand cubic feet per minute.
Don't be fooled by the store displays. Those streamers are placed around the edge for a reason - that's the only place where the air is moving! Stand a few feet away from this fan and you will literally feel nothing.
Meanwhile, it's loud. That little 6" fan produces 37 decibels of sound. The Dyson is closer to 50. That's more than twice as loud (decibels are a log scale, every 10 is a doubling).
It's intriguing that some are so taken with this fan. It would have some benefits. It won't muss your hair, and it's unlikely to ruffle your papers. But let's be real - this is a fan, not a vase of flowers.
Buy this fan only if you prioritize owning a statement piece over owning a functioning fan.

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 10 Inches, White Review

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, 10 Inches, White

We were attracted to this fan due to its "cool" factor and it performs as advertised. However for its commanding price, it could use some improvements such as:
The silver coating on the 12" model looks like cheap plastic. We exchanged ours for the 10" model in gloss white and it presented a significantly more refined appearance.
We purchased the Dyson to replace a standard table fan in a mini-home theater room to reduce the noise level. Sadly, the Dyson, due to its high speed internal turbo motor, was noticeably louder than the fan it was to replace. We kept it anyhow but for a different application.
For the money, a simple remote control would have been a welcome addition.
The variable speed control is a nice touch but its range seems limited to "medium" on its lowest setting, reducing its usefulness for close-up gentle (and quiet) cooling (in our instance, sharing a computer table).
That said, it it does move a lot of air, looks great and it a no-brainer for anyone with small children.

SPT SF-1530I Mini Tower Fan with Ionizer Review

SPT SF-1530I Mini Tower Fan with Ionizer

I have two of these fans, one in my home office and one at work. To me, they are indispensable in maintaining a more comfortable environment, especially as a cubicle dweller at work. They move an easily adequate volume of air - I rarely turn it above the low speed setting. One kind of nice side benefit is that the sound from the fan, while obviously not silent, does create a "white noise" that is somewhat effective in drowning out ambient sounds while not being annoying. If you are looking for a small footprint fan for a space inside of 8x8', this one is highly recommended.
