(More customer reviews)I spent a great deal of time comparing different purifiers: cost, performance, ease of use, noise, filter replacement, etc. This unit is superb in every respect. The unit is large but is very handsome and blends in well with the room. It has a very smooth fan that is not too loud but but you can really feel it move the air. There is one filter to replace and they are not terribly expensive and easy to find. In short, I think this unit really meets my needs while being fairly inexpensive and, over the past 6 months, 100% reliable.

Offering a space-saving, streamlined modern design that's nicely portable from room to room, the 3M Filtrete FAP03-RS Ultra Clean air purifier is designed for rooms where daily activity is frequent. Better than HEPA purifiers at capturing large airborne particles from the air passing through the filter, it's 99.9 percent effective at capturing allergens as small as 0.1 microns--including pollen, mold spores, and dust mite debris.
The FAP03-RS cleans rooms up to 350 square feet, and it can be placed unobtrusively against a wall. (More customer reviews)This thing is amazing, and I'm a huge fan. I have it in my office at work, and every time a co-worker comes in, they make mention of how fresh the air in my office smells. It's a dramatic and noticeable difference from the air in the rest of the building.
Great things:
- Very quiet, and really only audible when the fan is on its highest setting.
- The design is attractive and unobtrusive.
- The timer feature is a plus, especially in my case; it makes it easy to set the purifier to turn off when I leave for the day.
- I'm a big fan of the internal UV light that kills germs. I haven't taken an air sample yet to make sure this is working, but I have faith. :)
- The remote keeps me from having to get up and walk to the purifier to change a setting - I can do it right from my desk.
Things that could be better:
- Being able to turn off the display at night would be great - the light on it is pretty bright in the dark.
- Being able to turn off the beeping sound when changing a setting.
- The price is a bit steep for an air purifier.
I'm not entirely sure why previous reviews were complaining about the ionizing feature, because you can turn that off if you're concerned about an old report Consumer Reports published. If anything, it should get a *higher* rating for including that feature.
Either way, I really like the unit, and I'll be purchasing one for my bedroom as well.

It's amazing to see how dirty the filter is when it is time to change the filters - kind of like when you empty a vacuum cleaner bag. It's hard to believe there is so much stuff in the air. I have found it much easier to replace the filter every 6 months than having to clean a filter weekly. The unit is a bit loud on the highest fan speed setting and found it works best to run it on speed 3 or 4 before I go to sleep and then lower it to speed 1 or 2. On the lower fan speed settings it sounds more like white noise and after a couple days of running the unit I forgot it was on.

(More customer reviews)I searched through a large selection of air filters trying to optimize price, utility, reputation, and ease of use (I don't have time to replace some components every 6 months and other components every 3 months, etc). I decided on the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier. From there, it was a search for a reasonable retailer. Due to price (along with free shipping) and Amazon backing, I chose All Seasons Health.
The product arrived quickly and in perfect condition--I would definitely order other products through this retailer.
I pulled the Healthmate out of the box and after reading the instructions, I plugged it in and away it went (yep, that was it). I was having a problem with new carpet installation (an abundance of VOC's causing watering eyes, sore throat, and dizziness); the difference in just two days was remarkable and noticed by others. The Healthmate has three settings, low, medium, and high. The output on high is amazing and has an added benefit of dramatically increasing airflow in the room. The low setting is quiet enough to sit next to the machine and watch a movie without difficulty.
According to the instructions, in about four to five years I will have to replace the filter inside and from a cursory review of the instructions, it should be much simpler than replacing my water filter.
I will add further comments closer to allergy season.

Holmes HAP706-U True HEPA Mini-Tower Allergen Remover Review

(More customer reviews)As soon as I got it, I started it running full-speed in my 120sq.ft bedroom all evening and night. Within an hour or two of running, I could already tell a noticeable difference in the air quality. I have the ionizer running as well. The air is fresher, and I can breathe easier. It is the first time in years, I woke up without my nose and throat congested from my dust/mold allergies.
While the box states it is only for rooms up to 81sq.ft. I found it has worked really well in my slightly larger room. The high fan-speed is powerful, but noticeable in sound. However, it is only just as noisy as any "wind" type fan. However, on the medium and low fan-speeds it is practically inaudible. It is currently on the medium fan-speed and my desktop computer is louder than it at this moment.
This takes the Holmes "D" type filters, and I can get a 2-pack at my local WalMart for $30. The instruction manual says that based on air quality and typical usage, you should change the filter every 10 - 12 months. Therefore, a $30 2-pack could last you two years. Also, of course, the Air Purifier does come with a filter preinstalled. Typical usage according to the instruction manual is operating it continuously.
I do not smoke, nor do I have any pets. So, I cannot attest to its usefulness in that regard. However, my room has a mold problem and I also have a dust allergy.
I am quite please with the Holmes HAP706-U Air Purifier.

(More customer reviews)This AP250 is well put together, efficient, and ideal for a 320 sq foot or smaller room. It has very simple controls, 3 speeds and off, and it arrived ready to go -- no need to do any set up, just plug it in and enjoy. Best of all, it's extremely quiet. On low, it's barely audible, on medium, it has a pleasant low pitched hum that serves nicely as white noise, and even on high, the fan is considerably louder, but not annoying or shrill. I've tried much smaller units that were so loud it was impossible to sleep, watch tv, etc, while they were on... so this one is a keeper. The fan is powerful and it blows air straight up to circulate (supposedly it will clean the room air about 5x an hour). The back of the unit is flat, so it can be put flush against the wall. I'm trying to find out if it's ok to run it in a horizontal position with the air blowing out vs up, but until I confirm that, I'm leaving it on the floor. The only negatives I've found so far are that it's quite large-- bulkier than expected-- so it can't be used on a table easily, but it's not too heavy to move around. The 3 prong cord is a bit shorter than I'd like, so you are limited to placing it in a location a few feet from a wall socket. (they say you are not supposed to use an extension cord). It does require replacement pre-filters and True Hepa filters, which could get costly.Otherwise, I've had it running full time for a few days and I'm very pleased with the results. Dust is starting to accumulate, and the air feels fresh, despite my neighbor's not so great cooking! In case you're wondering, there is no ionizer feature in this unit ... probably just as well, given recent negative reports about ionizers. ABT delivery was fast. Very pleased .

(More customer reviews)I bought this primarily to reduce pollen in the air to keep my allergies under control. It seems to have helped, and I've found it is also great at eliminating pet odors (if I don't run it, the room starts to smell like our dog).
The filter replacement indicator is helpful, and the filters last a reasonable length of time.
I run it on low most of the time, which seems to be enough for it to do its job. It's not whisper quiet on low, but I find the noise level acceptable and I sleep with it running right next to my bed. Medium and high speeds are quite noisy and therefore I use them only to try to clear an odor in a hurry.
