In August he will begin a clinical study during which his immune system will be wiped out and he'll need all the help he can get with not catching something that will kill him. Currently it sits in our rec room which was an add on in the 70s with no insulation, no heat and no air. It has a vaulted ceiling and dust, dust, dust. It works amazingly well. Easy to clean, too.

Rabbit Air BioGS replacement HEPA filter for models SPA-421A & SPA-582A Review

(More customer reviews)This item was a direct OEM replacement to the filter that came with my unit. There was NO discrepancies between this one and the original.
Aside from the obvious shipping materials (which were ample): The packaging for this product is minimal: only a purple bag around it. No pointless extra box or other materials you just end up throwing away. The purple bag is "PE rated for recycling.
My last filter lasted 3 years, which is 18 months longer than suggested. How I knew it was time to change out the filter was that the unit began to suck air around the filter instead of through it. I would recommend NOT going quite this long, maybe 24 months.
I did, however, vacuum the filter every month or so with a good HEPA rated vacuum. This will prolong the life of your filter to 24 months, depending on your environment.

I decided to open one and try it out just in case it didn't work. I placed it in my living room and was planning to place the second in the bedroom. Long behold, the allergies went away and I didn't even have to use the second unit! It is very simple and easy to use. The fan in the unit is so quiet that I forget it's even on. I told myself to remember to turn it off because I was afraid that the electric bill was bound to go through the roof. I forgot to turn it off until I saw my Con Edison bill...three weeks later...it costs nothing to operate this monster!

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased one of these for our house. Our family suffers from allergies which result many times in sinus infections, as well as colds. I was tired of our two young kids constantly being medicated for their runny noses and I thought this would help. My wife was a bit skeptical, but within the first 2 days of installing this air purifier in the family room the stuffy noses went away and we have not had a sinus infection (or really even a runny nose) since. I have purchased 3 more - one for each bedroom - and am very pleased with the performance. The unit is barely noticeable on the "silent" mode (I have to put my hand over it to know it is on). The kids like the "medium" setting for bedtime because it provides some "white" noise. I typically leave them on medium when we are not home. I have cleaned all of the units and it was very easy. All you do is use the brush attachment on the vacuum and clean up the front, top and inside of it. I did use the Assail a Cell cleaner on the Truman Cell - simply spray it on, wash it off and let it dry overnight. Some people have complained of the snapping or popping noise that the Oreck's occasionally make but I have only heard it a couple times and it let me know it is doing it's job. I have had overall excellent results with this air purifier and highly recommend it. The remote control is very handy. The air in our home feels and smells clean and fresh.

Germ Guardian Ac4010 Table Top Muti-layer Air Purifier Review

(More customer reviews)Hello everyone. I just received this tabletop air filter and sanitizer today in the mail from Amazon. Initial impressions are these:
1) Great size, will fit any table-top, even night stands.
2) Solid Build quality in the molded plastic housing and electrical cord.
3) SUPER QUIET blower fan with or without filter installed.
4) *Perfect* Air Flow Rate. **Too fast of an air flow rate and there is no way the Germicidal action will occur as it takes time for the DNA Base Pairing of Germs to be disrupted, which is the core of Germicidal UV Technology.
5) Incorrect labeling of the UVC Germicidal lamp (it says UVA, but is CLEARLY UVB at worst**).
6) A common problem with an easy fix... "My bulb isn't turning on!!!" SEE BELOW;
UV Basics; Mercury Vapor Tube lights produce 4 distinct peak UV outputs of light:
Near-UV - "Black Light" - Causes Fluorescence - Peak output at Mercury's H-Line @ 404nm. 400nm+
UVA - "Black Light" - Causes Fluorescence - Peak Output at Mercury's I-Line @ 365nm. 315nm to 400nm.
UVB - "Invisible" - Causes Fluorescence in only special materials not used for "Black Light". 280nm to 315nm.
UVC - "Invisible" - Causes no Fluorescence - Germicidal - Peak output @ Mercury's Line @ 253nm. 100nm to 280nm.
Vacuum UV - "Invisible" - Absorbed by Air and Glass - Requires Quartz Envelope - Creates Ozone - Peak Output at Mercury's Line @ 184nm. 100 to 200nm.
This unit produces no ozone. So from that we know that the bulb used inside is a UVC bulb not in a Quartz Envelope. It should appear lit up as a sky-blue color to the naked eye (you have to depress the safety switch to the top left of the bulb for it to turn on) and will not cause much fluorescence at all compared to a "Black Light" bulb. It is a Coated Glass UVC Low Pressure Mercury Vapor 6 inch Lamp rated around 4Watts. These bulbs last an exceptionally long time and rarely burn out. This Unit get a lot of bad reviews for the bulb being irreplaceable and often not working...
Common problem: "My Bulb won't TURN ON/LIGHT UP!!!";
When I received my unit, my bulb did not turn on. However after a few minutes of being on I noticed a very very faint glow on the left corner of the bulb. These kinds of bulbs are low-pressure mercury lamps and they run on high voltage. High voltage causes faint glowing even if only one side of the bulb is connected because some of the current still affects the mercury gas inside. These kinds of bulbs VERY VERY RARELY Burn out unless physically broken/destroyed. They do not even burn out from prolonged use, they just get dimmer as time goes on. So; there is a faint glow, thus the bulb is not bad. This leaves an electrical connection problem. Clearly high voltage was present from the faint glow - the circuitry must be OK. This leaves mechanical connection problems; let's open 'er up and see what's wrong...
1) The bulbs is held in with a plastic cap on each side held in place with two small philips screws. They are easily removed, but be sure the unit is OFF AND UNPLUGGED. Be sure not to damage the fragile bulb. Just remove the plastic caps and screws. You'll see there is nothing holding the wires of the bulb in, they just sit on tiny metal trays. Here is where the electrical problem is - a weak connection!!!!
2) Carefully remove the bulb with clean dry hands, and very very gently bend the wires a very slight amount so that they are held against the metal trays when the bulb is placed back in. You want the silvered tips of the wires to sit flat on the trays making good contact. Hold bulb firmly but gently in place in a position where it makes good contact to the trays and replace the plastic covers. Carefully put the screws back in and be sure the bulb does not shift position. Do NOT over tighten.
3) Plug unit back in, depress the safety switch with a non-metal/non-conductive object, and turn the unit on. The bulb should now light up fully.

[...]I recommend this unit to anyone who understands how to unplug it and use a philips screw driver since it seems the majority of the time the bulb shifts loose during shipment.

I studied most all of them and found that there are many con-games going on with cleaver advertise schemes. I ended up purchasing both Newport 9000 and the Sharp FP-N60CX because I couldn't decide. And I love both. It has been six months and they are on all the time -- contineous. I have four large dogs, the air is fresh and my girfriend with dog allergies is doing fine. I have found both reliable economical and working as advertised. I use the Newport in the larger living-room and the Sharp in the bedroom. They both appear to be on the leading edge of technology sampling the air and automatically adjust. Both are operating in the automatic mode day and night -- noise is not a problem. Perfectly Satisfied.

Honeywell 17000 HEPA QuietCare Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)I use this HEPA machine in my bedroom 24/7. It's helped dramatically with my many allergies (I just found out the allergies are causing my asthma that I've had for 9 months).
The only gripe I have with this machine is that it states that it's "Quietcare". On high, this thing is pretty loud!
However, I had a more inexpensive model (I think it was Honeywell 50010) and it was deafening, so this is an improvement.
Otherwise, this machine is giving me EXCELLENT results. I can sleep through the night without my eyes watering or dry mouth. It's improved my breathing (my family tells me 'I sound better') and helped with my snoring problems. At the price they're selling it for here, I'd pick one up. If noise bothers you just keep it on the low setting.
It really is a good product!

(More customer reviews)We chose this model because it was reputed to clear the air of not only dust and allergens but mold as well which was a key selling point. Another selling point was that it did not require replaceable filters. The unit is quiet.
Particles collect on flat metal slats and a light comes on that tells you it needs cleaning. The slats are quite dirty when cleaning time comes so you know it's collecting something.
We've found however that our unit starts to make a crackly noise sort of like static electricity when the slats need to be cleaned, long before the cleaning light comes on. So we clean it when the static noise comes instead of waiting.
It's easy to clean. The slat house pops right out and you wipe it down with a damp cloth or paper towels. The towels are always black with whatever the unit has collected from the air which really makes you wonder what's in the air.
The unexpected benefit is that we don't need to dust as often. The area stays much cleaner. I wish I could put several more throughout the house just for this benefit alone! Anything that makes cleaning easier is a big plus in my book!

(More customer reviews)I am allergic to cats, so naturally I adopted two and I'm about to get a third. I was STRUGGLING with my allergies so started looking into air purifiers and found that Honeywell consistently had good reviews. This was a very new model at the time I purchased and I was a bit nervous about being a guinea pig but my allergies clicked the purchase button for me.
I had to return the first unit because it started making a strange cyclic humming sound, kind of like the motor was getting tired - I'd only had it for about two weeks. Amazon Return Center is amazing and I had a replacement unit in two days. The second unit is great, I've had no problems so far. It's whisper-quiet (unless you crank it up to its highest setting, which isn't necessary) and I really notice a difference in the quality of the air. If I turn it off, I start getting the sniffles and itchy eyes in no time. I don't use the UV feature, but I do like the ionizer.
***UPDATE*** Unfortunately I've also had to arrange for the second unit to be returned, this time I contacted Honeywell directly. The purifier has been getting progressively more noisy and it sounds like the motor is straining. I'm really surprised because I have a couple of cheaper Honeywell units that have been on 24/7 for almost the last year and I have had absolutely no problems with them. I just don't think this unit is ready for the market yet. Honeywell customer service has been excellent, they were responsive and are going to exchange the purifier for one of their higher models at no charge. I think I might try the Rabbit Air purifier if the next unit I receive is not satisfactory. SIGH!

(More customer reviews)I am very sensitive to chemicals. I give the HealthMate Plus credit for saving my life. With it in my home I can handle odors and chemicals from other apartments and the outside.
Mine has been thru neighbors painting, and remodeling. I did have a break down with it and the warranty was honored. They even put an emergency tag on the repair so it was repaired faster.
The newer ones are so much more quieter than the old ones. When I got mine back from the factory I was constantly putting my hand on it to see if it was running. It was just so quiet.
This is one of the first items that I recommend for a chemically sensitive person to buy.
When the box arrived all I had to do was lift the box off and plug it in. It was so well packed I was impressed.

It has lowered the overall odor in my home and completely eliminated the pungent odor from daily hookah smoking from my dining and sitting room in about a month running on auto-mode. The 5 speeds it has goes from a soft soft whisper up to a bit of a roar and the amount of air it moves is noticeable too. I've been using it for a nearly 2 months now and believe it's very effective. I have a chronic low level sinus issue where stuff in the air can really bother them and many times don't breathe well at night and wake up very fuzzy-headed, but in the first week of having the 2 different Electrolux purifiers in the house I wake up feeling alert and clear-headed now. I certainly didn't expect that! There are so many fake air purifiers out there and I did some homework on the technologies to weed out the fakes and reading reviews to weed out the ones with issues.
I researched and shopped around for the best purifier at a reasonable cost and this is it in my opinion. I'm a senior electronics technician of over 25 years by occupation in the fields of medical and telecom equipment and good at understanding how technologies whether electrical or mechanical works.
I'm very skeptical about the claims they all make and there are so many of these too good to be true purifiers that work by magic or seem to be really leading edge sophisticated technology that's not so much. Honestly when I started educating myself on air purifiers it got confusing. I spent many hours over a month or so looking at all the different makes and trying to eek all the science out of each one. These Electrolux units I think are solid and clean the air with a simple 3 stage process instead of 6 to 9 steps and the extra maintenance and cost that would entail to do maybe as well as this one. I think that this unit does as well or better as some of the ones that go for $500 or more.
This Electrolux is well worth the money if you have a larger area with it's ability to move a lot of air and it's CADR specs are impressively higher than some of these high priced things that rate half as good and do little more than a walk-in closet. Between the HEPA filter and the PlasmaWave ionizer it scrubs the air of everything and it's cool how it senses when the air needs more cleaning and steps the fan speed up to clean more and gives an indication on a 5 segment display. Mostly I just leave it in auto mode and it adjusts as needed to the air quality. The air in the house is not only dust free as in I never see anything floating in the air through the sunlight or a lamp, but the overall odor that the place had has been much neutralized. It does a great job of eliminating cooking odor even if I don't use the kitchen range exhaust fan.
I've figured out that these Electrolux units are built on the same chassis as the Winix 5300, Sharp Plasmacluster, and possibly the Rabbit BioGS. Seriously go look them up and tell me they aren't based on the same unit! But all have wildy varying ratings and prices and the brute performance and low price of theElectrolux makes it for me the cream at the top.
I can't think of anything to ding it on; the quality seems very good and the construction is solid. It's very good so it gets a 5 star. I'll revisit this review later and update it from a longer term perspective.
I also have the EL490A that I use upstairs. It's a lower CADR rating but still higher than most, does about 80 sq ft less area and half the price. My overall impression with that unit is the same as this one; superb!

Winix 115115 True HEPA Plus 4 Replacement Filter Review

(More customer reviews)This filter was advertised as able to fit several Winix air cleaners. Unfortunately, it did not fit mine (model wac 5000). Rather than send it back I managed to trim and "shoehorn" it into my existing filter holder. It seems to be
functioning well and the quality of the filter is good, but I only gave it three stars as warning to anyone ordering,
to be sure and triple check model numbers. Winix makes a number of Hepa air cleaners, and I heard that Electrolux
is now making the Plasmawave units with identical design. I do not know if the Electrolux filters are interchangeable
but I suspect not. Wouldn't it be great if manufacturers could reach agreement on a group of standardized sizes
so that customers would not have to constantly research the tangled web of filter replacement???

(More customer reviews)My bf and I bought this air filter specifically for the fact we both have asthma and wanted a nice air filter that not only cleaned the air, but would not create ozone. No where in the reviews did it say that it was an ionizer so we bought it. We had it on for one night, it did a great job cleaning the air and was quiet but when I went to go break down the packaging, I noticed teeny tiny print on the bottom of the box that said: warning: includes ionizer that produces ozone. do not use if you have asthma.
We were both quite upset that we didn't see this warning on Amazon before we bought it. Had to return it! False advertising!

(More customer reviews)Instructions for removing UV bulb are not clear; I broke mine when cleaning because the instruction manual was not very informative in how to remove the bulb and had to order a new bulb. Also the warning indicator light for the electrostatic filter was lit, inicating the filter had to be cleaned. When I dissasembled the filter, the electrostatic filter was very clean without any collected dust.

Ultraviolet light possesses just the right amount of energy to break organic molecular bonds. As microorganisms pass by the UV rays radiated from the ultraviolet lamp, this bond breakage translates into cellular or genetic damage for microorganisms, such as germs, viruses, bacteria, fungi (like molds), etc. This resulted in the destruction of the microorganisms. The same damage occurs to humans, but is limited to the skin and eyes. UV air purifiers, such as the Multi-Tech XJ-3000C from Surround Air, shield direct ultraviolet light from escaping the inside of the unit, sterilizing only the air that passes through the air cleaner. The Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommends the use of ultraviolet light with simultaneous use of HEPA air filters, both of which are offered in the Multi-Tech XJ-3000C air purifier. The U.S. government now specifies that UV light should be used in air handling units to improve indoor air quality in government buildings, by controlling airborne and surface microbial growth. The Air Institute of Respiratory Education suggests UV lights be used in buildings for indoor air quality purposes, and states that may be the final line of defense against those diseases that have developed resistance to drugs, such as tuberculosis and others. According to the Aerobiological Engineering Dept. at Penn State University, the ultraviolet component of sunlight is the main reason microbes die in the outdoor air. The die-off rate in the outdoors varies from one pathogen to another, but can be anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes for a 90-99% kill of viruses or contagious bacteria. The Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommends UV lights in homeless shelters to prevent the spread of disease, particularly TB (tuberculosis). A study by Air & Waste Management Association found the combination of a HEPA air filter and germicidal UV lamp reduced bacteria by 80% in a 3072 cubic foot chamber.
